What Is HEIC, and Why Won't It Open?
Apple's photo format is technically better than JPEG — and that is exactly why it causes trouble.
What HEIC actually is
HEIC is Apple's file extension for HEIF, the High Efficiency Image File Format standardised as ISO/IEC 23008-12. Inside the container, the picture is compressed with HEVC (H.265) — the same codec used for 4K video. Because HEVC models an image far more aggressively than JPEG's 1992-era approach, a HEIC photo typically occupies about half the space at visually comparable quality. Apple made it the camera default in iOS 11, which is why almost every recent iPhone photo arrives as a .heic file.
Technically it is the better format in several measurable ways: up to 16 bits per colour channel against JPEG's 8, an alpha channel for transparency, and the ability to hold multiple images plus depth maps in one container — which is how Live Photos and Portrait-mode data are packaged.
So why is it such a nuisance?
The problem is reach, not quality. Windows requires the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store, and a separate paid HEVC extension for the picture data. Most content management systems reject the upload outright. Android only gained decoding in version 10. Plenty of desktop software still shows nothing but a placeholder icon, and many photo printers and older smart TVs cannot read it at all.
This is why converting HEIC to JPG remains a routine task despite HEIC being the superior format. You are trading technical merit for the ability to actually use the file.
What you give up in the conversion
Worth knowing before you convert a whole library: the 16-bit colour depth is reduced to 8 bits, any transparency is flattened, depth maps are dropped, and a Live Photo becomes a single still frame. For ordinary photographs the visible difference is negligible — an 8-bit JPEG already covers far more tonal range than a screen or a print reproduces. If you are grading heavily or editing RAW-adjacent material, keep the HEIC original as your master and treat the JPG as a distribution copy.
One detail causes most of the confusion: orientation. iPhones record photos in the sensor's native landscape orientation and store a rotation flag in the EXIF metadata rather than rotating the pixels. Converters that ignore that flag output sideways images. Ours renders the photo after the browser has applied the orientation, so the result matches what you saw in the Photos app.
Avoiding the problem entirely
If you would rather not convert at all, change the source. On your iPhone, open Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible. The camera then writes JPEG directly, at roughly double the storage per photo. Note that this affects only newly taken pictures — everything already in your library stays HEIC.
There is also a middle path worth knowing: when you AirDrop or share photos to a non-Apple device, iOS often converts to JPEG automatically. The files that arrive as HEIC are usually the ones copied straight off the device over a cable or pulled from a backup.
If you do convert in bulk, the result will be larger than the source — expect roughly one and a half to two times. Running the output through our image compressor at quality 80 typically brings it back near the original size with no visible difference.
