For photography archives, 90-95% quality preserves more detail.
How to use the quality slider
The quality percentage controls how much data JPEG compression discards. At 100% quality, almost no data is discarded β the file remains large. At 60-70% quality, significant data is discarded β the file is much smaller but artefacts may appear around edges and fine details. For most web images and email attachments, 75-85% quality provides the right balance. The live preview shows both versions simultaneously so you can compare before downloading.
What Is the Best Quality Setting for Web Images?
For web use, 75-85% quality is the sweet spot. At 80%, most images look virtually identical to the original while file size drops by 50-70%. This makes pages load faster and saves bandwidth. For print or professional use, stick to 90-95%.
PNG images are compressed losslessly β quality settings apply only to the output format. When compressing PNGs, the tool converts them to WebP or JPEG for maximum size reduction while maintaining visual quality.
Choosing a Quality Setting That Actually Matters
The quality slider does not map to a percentage of visual fidelity. It sets a quantisation parameter β how aggressively the encoder rounds off the frequency coefficients that describe each block of the image. Because rounding hits high-frequency detail first, the relationship between the number and what you perceive is strongly non-linear, which is why the useful range is much narrower than the slider suggests.
In practice, 90β100 is nearly indistinguishable from the original and rarely worth the file size unless the image will be edited further. The 75β85 band is where most web images belong: substantial savings, artefacts invisible at normal viewing distance. This is the range to default to. Between 60 and 75, degradation becomes visible on close inspection, particularly as softening around sharp edges β acceptable for thumbnails and background imagery. Below 60, blocking and colour banding are obvious and it is usually better to reduce the image's dimensions than to compress harder.
Content changes the calculation more than most people expect. Photographs with natural texture and gradual gradients hide compression artefacts well and tolerate aggressive settings. Images containing text, screenshots, line art or large flat areas of uniform colour expose them badly β ringing appears around every letter edge. If your image is mostly text or graphics, JPEG is the wrong format at any quality setting; PNG or lossless WebP will be both smaller and sharper. And note that compressing an image that is already compressed adds a second generation of loss without recovering anything, so always work from the largest, cleanest original available.
