Where the text comes from
The words are not random Latin. They are a scrambled passage from De finibus bonorum et malorum, a treatise on ethics that Cicero wrote in 45 BC. The familiar opening is a mangled fragment of dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet — "pain itself, because it is pain" — with the first syllable of dolorem lost somewhere along the way.
The passage entered printing in the 1500s, when an unknown typesetter scrambled it to make a specimen sheet, and it survived every technology change since. Letraset put it on dry-transfer sheets in the 1960s, Aldus put it in PageMaker in the 1980s, and it now ships with practically every design tool made.
Its usefulness is a property of the text itself. Latin word lengths and letter frequencies sit close enough to English to produce a believable grey block, while remaining unreadable enough that nobody starts editing it. Repeating "sample text" would produce visual stripes; real English would invite comments on the copy instead of the layout.
When placeholder text is the wrong choice
It is a layout tool, not a content strategy. A design proven with three neat paragraphs of Lorem Ipsum often collapses when the real text is one line in one place and eleven in another. If the content is known even approximately, blocking out realistic lengths tells you more than perfect Latin does.
It also hides the questions that matter. Nobody looks at Lorem Ipsum and asks whether the heading explains anything, whether the button label describes what happens, or whether an empty state needs a sentence of its own. Those decisions get deferred to whoever fills the boxes later, usually under time pressure.
And it escapes. Lorem Ipsum has shipped in production pages, print runs and app store listings often enough that searching for it turns up live examples on any given day. Before launch, search the codebase for "lorem" — it takes seconds and occasionally saves an embarrassment.
